Psychotherapy refers to the treatment of emotional or psychological problems and is derived from the Greek word «ψυχή» [psychee], meaning breath, spirit or soul, and «θεραπεία» [therapeea] which means healing or treatment. Ancient Greek philosophers from Plato in Republic to Aristotle On Psyche to Thales of Miletus, developed elaborate theories on the concept of psyche. They were also the first to identify mental illness as a medical condition and recognized the value of treating it with encouragement and consoling words.
